UTOPIA. The world itself sounds calm, easy and bright. With the current state of our world, people dream of what kind of reality they wish to live in and it’s different for everyone, which is what I wanted to explore. I asked people closest to me what their utopia looks like, here are their responses.

My sister (16 years old): I think greed is a big flaw in our world today. In my ideal reality, there would be no reason for money-grabbing people to exist. Everyone would live peacefully and share everything with each other. There should be no reason for a person to want more power or more money because everyone is equal!

My brother (9 years old): In my utopia, Bernie Sanders would be the president of the United States! Since America is one of the most influential and recognized countries in the world, if Bernie Sanders was president, I believe the rest of the world would be amazing. He would solve every problem with the feelings of the minority class of Americans in mind. Not of those rich, white Americans Trump cares so much about. I may not be American and I may only be 9 years old, but I know great leader when I see one!

My mom (42 years old): My ideal world would offer everyone of every race, status and gender free post-secondary education. I want everyone in the world to be educated, and I do not want them to worry about tuition, student loans, etc. No matter if they are rich or poor, I believe their education is vital for the improvement of our society.

My friend 1 (17 years old): My perfect world includes no racism. If everyone looks at everyone else as an equal, I believe it would automatically lead to a much more peaceful world than what we have now. Not just the equality of races but also gender. If men and women were equal, I can almost guarantee people would live in harmony.

My friend 2 (18 years old): I think that an ideal world would include Communism. As afraid as most people are to admit this, this ideology was proposed by Karl Marx to live in a utopia, which is also why it is an impossible achievement in the real world. With the amount of poverty, tyranny, war and conflict, the success of communism would be a dream come true for me.

And my utopia? Here it is; A world where the best experience in life is learning. People don’t feel obligated to learn. They don’t learn because they need a job or because they are frightened for their future, they learn for the sake of learning! They choose to learn because of their endless curiosity and desire to find out more. Moreover, they don’t learn something because everyone is learning it. They learn what they truly want to learn. That can be math, science, and even art. In our society today, people are shamed for going into art history or music or drama. I want to live in a world where people’s real dreams are prioritized. Where you can be who ever you want to be without feeling judged or ashamed in any way. Where you can make as many mistakes as you need to become what you want to become. In a world where every profession, every university major, every person, is viewed as equal. I think that in a world like that, everyone would feel more free and far more happy and pleased with themselves.

Everyone’s idea of utopia is different. People seem to care so much that there are movies and TV shows made about them. It’s what helps as remember to stay hopeful. To be at peace and know that good things will come our way. Even at a time like this.
